    Osteopathy in Durham

Osteopathy is a way of detecting a wide range of conditions, treating and preventing these by moving, stretching and massaging your muscles and joints.

Osteopathy is based on the principle that your wellbeing depends on your bones, muscles, ligaments and connective tissue functioning smoothly together, and recognising the body’s ability to heal itself.

Osteopaths use physical manipulation, stretching and massage with the aim of:

    • increasing the mobility of joints
    • relieving muscle tension
    • enhancing the blood supply to tissues
    • helping the body to heal

Your osteopath aims to restore the normal function and stability of your muscles and joints to help the body heal itself.

They will use their hands to treat your body in a variety of ways, using a mixture of gentle and forceful techniques. If your'e looking for a more gentle therapy, we recommend you consider the Bowen Technique.

The techniques your osteopath will choose for you are chosen based on your individual needs, and the symptoms you have reported.

    These may include:

    • massage – to release and relax muscles
    • stretching – manipulating muscles and stiff joints
    • articulation – where your joints are moved through their natural range of motion
    • high-velocity thrusts – short, sharp movements to the spine, which normally produce a clicking noise similar to cracking your knuckles

These techniques will aim to reduce pain, improve movement and encourage blood flow.

Osteopathy isn't usually painful, although it's not unusual to feel sore or stiff in the first few days after treatment, particularly if you're having treatment for a painful or inflamed injury.

We see hundreds of people each year with similar problems to yours. The most common are caused by work and sports injuries, but the other little things you do, or don't do each day, can all have an effect. That's where we come in!

Your body is subjected to different types of strain every day. These can result from the way you sit, working at a computer, from standing for long periods, from repetitive motion, overworking, under-resting or from accidental injury. Your body absorbs all these strains.

Usually the regeneration process works silently without you even knowing. However, sometimes things go wrong and you are left feeling pain, discomfort, immobile and vulnerable.

An Osteopath can facilitate the regeneration process – principally by the practice of touch, physical manipulation, stretching and massage to increase the mobility of joints, to relieve muscle tension, to enhance the blood and nerve supply to tissues, and to help your body’s own healing mechanisms.

Before your first session there are some things you should bear in mind...

    • It is helpful to wear loose clothing that allows easy access to areas where you are having the most problems.
    • Try not to come for treatment on an empty stomach or straight after a heavy meal. We recommend you eat at least 2 hours before your appointment.

    Your first Osteopathy consultation...

    • During your first visit your osteopath needs to gain a thorough understanding of your main complaint/needs and your general health and lifestyle. This involves asking questions about your current symptoms and your medical history, as well as such things as your sleeping pattern, your appetite and digestion, and your emotional wellbeing. Women may also be asked about their menstrual cycle and any past pregnancies and childbirth.
    • You may feel that some questions appear unrelated to your condition but the information you give helps your practitioner form a more complete picture of your health and lifestyle.
    • You should mention any medication that you are taking and whether you have tried any other therapies.

    Treatment plan and treatment...

    • The osteopath will use their hands to find areas of weakness, tenderness, restriction or strain within your body, particularly the spine.
    • Together with all the information you have given, your osteopath will then put together your treatment plan, which may include lifestyle and dietary advice.
    • Your practitioner will use a whole range of techniques as described in the other tabs, specific to your individual needs.
    • Your treatment has very few side effects and any that do occur are usually mild and self-correcting. Please do not hesitate to contact your practitioner if you have any queries or concerns following treatment.
    • 48.00 Assess & Treat
    • 38.00 Follow-ups

Your practitioner may recommend a certain number of treatments and excercises to do at home for the greatest benefit - and to get you back to doing what you love as soon as possible.

We are here whenever you need us. Just give us a call or drop us an email if you need to discuss anything with your practitioner at any time during or after your treatment plan.

    • I had sudden and unexplained back pain – it was excruciating to move. Fortunately I got an appointment very quickly and drove to it with an ice-pack attached – dreading the drive back after a session with Amanda. I was amazed at how quickly I had relief and flexibility returned – she was able to diagnose the issue, provide exercises to improve my back and furthermore she addressed a knee problem which was not part of my original need. What amazed me most has been the speed of my recovery – many thanks.

I had a lot of pain down my right leg and hip. The hospital physio could not help as they did not know where the pain was coming from. Amanda pinpointed the source immediately and started Osteopathy treatment along with home exercises. I improved with each visit and after 4 visits my leg is back to normal with no pain. I would certainly recommend other people to see the Osteopath.

    • I had difficulty with a range of movements involving my right shoulder which I damaged 2 years ago. I also had pain in my left elbow which increased when I lifted or turned it. The therapies Amanda used, and the exercises she gave me to do between sessions, resulted in a gradual improvement over a few weeks. She has also sorted out a few problems which I didn’t know I had, including problems with my knees and buttocks. I have been pleased with the treatment I’ve received.

    • I came to NIHP Durham after hurting my ankle. I was training for the Great North Run at the time and I found running very difficult and painful. After many recommendations from family, I saw Amanda for treatment and it really improved my ankle strength and reduced the pain I would feel after running. The stretches also given to me have worked wonders and I feel so much better. After a few appointments I was able to complete a 9 mile run without any pain the next day. Thank you so much for your help I can’t recommend you highly enough!

I had a shoulder problem which was very painful, and I was unable to use my left arm without pain. I was made to feel very at ease and comfortable by the Osteopath. The treatments were very painful at the time, and sore for a few days afterwards. However, with exercise to do at home between treatments I felt better and could move more each week, with the pain receding. My shoulder is now pain free and my neck and shoulders are much more relaxed.
