Aromatherapy in Durham

What is aromatherapy?

Aromatherapy is a rebalancing therapy provided at #NIHPDurham that uses essential oils, specially selected and blended to suit your individual needs.

The blend is then applied incorporating techniques such as massage, muscle release, meridian stroking, light acupressure and zone walking.

Aromatherapy is thousands of years old with origins in ancient Egypt, India and the Far East. This deceptively simple therapy helps to rebalance the mind body and spirit; reduce stress, tension and pain; revive and invigorate the body; soothe and uplift emotions and clear the mind.

How will it help me?

Aromatherapy is a truly holistic experience and may:

  • Reduce stress and tension
  • Improve physical and emotional wellbeing
  • Strengthen the immune system
  • Include all the benefits of massage

Before your aromatherapy treatment

Before your aromatherapy session there are some things you should bear in mind.

Many commonly used massage points are located on the back, lower arms and legs, so it is helpful to wear loose clothing that allows easy access to these areas, or can be removed easily.

Try not to go for treatment on an empty stomach or straight after a heavy meal. We recommend you eat at least 2 hours before your appointment.

Your first consultation

During the first visit your aromatherapist needs to gain a thorough understanding of your main complaint and your general health and lifestyle.

This involves asking questions about your current symptoms and your medical history, as well as such things as your sleeping pattern, your appetite, digestion and emotional wellbeing. Women are also asked about their menstrual cycle and any past pregnancies and childbirth.

You might feel that some questions appear unrelated to your condition but the information you give helps your practitioner to form a more complete picture of your health and lifestyle.

Your individual needs

When talking about your main concerns, your practitioner might ask you to describe in your own words what the symptoms feel like and how severe they are. You may also be asked how long you have been having the symptoms, whether they are constant or intermittent and how frequent they are.

You should mention any medication that you are taking and whether you have tried any other therapies. In order to find the right treatment approach, your practitioner will also want to know more specific details. You can also ask any questions you might have.

Treatment plan and treatment

Your aromatherapist will put together a treatment plan based on all the information you have given and this will include a single oil or a blend of two or three. Your aromatherapist is likely to give you a massage using essential oils that have been diluted in a carrier oil. These light oils carry the essential oils and provide lubrication for massage.

Practitioners cannot make a medical diagnosis as they are not trained to do so; always seek advice from your GP before using complementary services.

Most people find aromatherapy treatments relaxing and often feel very calm after a treatment. You may feel a little tired or sleepy and should take this into account if you are planning to drive or use heavy machinery straight after your treatment.

You should refrain from vigorous exercise after treatment and, ideally, give yourself a little time to rest. It is also advisable not to drink alcohol for several hours after treatment.

Aromatherapy has very few side effects and any that do occur are usually mild and self-correcting. Please do not hesitate to contact your practitioner if you have any queries following treatment.
