Reflexology in Durham
What is Reflexology?
Reflexology is a non-intrusive, complementary therapy based on the theory that different points on your feet, lower leg, hands, face or ears correspond with different areas of your body.
Reflexologists believe that applying pressure to these ‘reflex’ areas can promote health in the corresponding organs through energetic pathways, for example:
- the tips of the toes reflect the head
- the heart and chest are around the ball of the foot
- the liver, pancreas and kidney are in the arch of the foot
- low back and intestines are towards the heel
A scientific explanation of this process is that the pressure sends signals via ‘pathways’ that balance the nervous system, or release chemicals such as endorphins that reduce your pain and stress.
How will Reflexology help me?
Stimulating these points promotes a feeling of relaxation, stimulates your circulation, improves your mood, helps to relieve tension, soothes your tired feet and improves your sense of wellbeing.
Reflexology aims to help your body to restore its balance naturally. After a treatment you may feel relaxed and experience reduced tension.
As a result, you might also notice yourself sleeping better and find your mood and sense of wellbeing improving. You may also find that other aspects improve too.
There are some positive reflexology research projects being carried out, and so currently there is not enough body of evidence for anyone to make clinical claims of effectiveness. Reflexologists do not claim to diagnose or cure.
